Why do the public hate estate agents?

In this video, Christopher Watkin and Marc von Grundherr from Benham and Reeves estate agents talk about how the media loves bashing estate agents and creating a perception that all UK property professionals live a life of luxury and indulgence for doing very little work. While this isn't true at all, professional agents work hard to help buyers find the right property and for sellers to get the right price. Despite the media talking down the efforts of estate agents, Marc stresses their importance and the significant contribution they make to the success of London's property market. Another reason, Marc explains, for the bad press that agents get is that they usually get blamed for deals that fall through. Deals can fall through for several reasons, such as buyers changing their minds or mortgages not getting approved or a seller pulls out, but the blame still ends up at the agent’s door even though they may have gone above and beyond to get the deal over the line. There are however, areas where agents can and should improve, like better communication and being more prompt to serve.
