Is the eviction process in the UK broken?

Property advice | 28.08.24

In this video, journalist Christopher Watkin and Marc von Grundherr from Benham and Reeves estate agents catch up on the lengthy and costly eviction process in the UK and how the system is grossly one-sided when it comes to supporting landlords against unscrupulous tenants. The legal route is full of obstacles, such as understaffed and oversubscribed courts that take months and sometimes over a year to get non-paying tenants evicted. Marc goes on to suggest the need for special housing courts that can help fast-track this sluggish eviction process that is currently breaking at the seams because of the shortage of qualified staff within the court system to handle the cases. Chris pulls out an interesting stat revealing landlords who find a tenant themselves instead of using a reliable letting agent are over 272% more likely to have pending rental arrears of two months or more. Marc further explains how Benham and Reeves work closely with their referencing partners and the alarming number of fake passports and other documents that only get spotted when you have such rigorous checks in place.
