How can the British housing crisis be solved?

Property advice | 28.08.24

From abolishing the Right to Buy scheme that allows beneficiaries of social housing to buy their council homes at a discount, to better coordination between council and private developers, in this video Marc von Grundherr from Benham and Reeves shares his thoughts on how the UK housing shortage can be dealt with more skilfully. Suggesting the need for councils to maintain existing properties before taking up new social housing projects, Marc also explains how councils and smaller developers can collaborate to create more stock and ease the current stocking pressures. Reducing capital gains tax on long-term ownership for overseas investors is another idea suggested by Marc to generate more liquidity and tempt investors to stay in the market. However, the primary concern with social housing is still the country-wide housing stock shortage that many councils find themselves in as they release more stock to the private market and are unable to build new homes quickly enough.
