A modern urban good-life in London’s Bermondsey

The smoke and clamour of the old docks, factories and riverside warehouses may be long gone, but Bermondsey still retains a distinct air of Dickensian energy and enterprise. It’s a vibe that can be detected in the wonderful artisan food shops that line Bermondsey Street and the wonder experienced when walking into one of the area’s many art and design galleries. The extension of the Jubilee Line Underground from the West End to Southeast/East London has contributed massively to the neighbourhood’s renewal, with increased accessibility making Bermondsey an attractive place for City professionals. A 1 minute walk from Kings College London (Guys campus) and just 16 mins by train to Kings College and 22 minutes by train to the London School of Economics make the location a convenient option, particularly with overseas students.

Here, you will find yourself immersed in the “Beer Mile”, a cluster of microbreweries plus a distillery that offer craft ale, artisan gin and gastropub-level food: a piece of advice – don’t try to do the whole mile in one go! Bermondsey is well served by a number of excellent independent restaurants. Spanish tapas, French bistro fare and good old English pie and mash are all represented in the form of Jose, Casse-Croute and M Manze, respectively. All of them can rely on nearby Maltby Street and Borough Markets for a steady supply of fresh artisan produce.

Do art galleries and craft beer go well together? Well in Bermondsey they do and the White Cube Gallery has quickly become a local institution as well as a global brand. Together with its sister venue in Hong Kong, White Cube offers space to cutting-edge contemporary artists and their massively influential exhibitions. Other galleries, together with the nearby Fashion and Textile Museum are helping Bermondsey become one of London’s major cultural hotspots.

Convenient travel connections

Transport connections in Bermondsey are simple and straightforward. The Jubilee Line runs from Bermondsey Underground Station eastwards to Canary Wharf, London City Airport and Stratford and westwards to the City (London Bridge) and the West End. Most of the Square Mile is within walking distance and morning jog along the Southbank can be completed in half an hour. It’s a run that will follow the footsteps of legends. The cobblestones of Shad Thames inspired the tale of Oliver Twist, the Tower of London has stood for over a millennium and the Globe Theatre gave the world William Shakespeare. All this art and life is right on Bermondsey’s continually thriving doorstep.
