Where to find the best Sunday roast in London

The Sunday roast is a quintessential British tradition which attracts admirers from all over the world. It’s not hard to see why: combine delicious meats, scrumptious vegetables, succulent gravy and a fluffy Yorkshire pudding (or two!) and you’ve a meal fit for a king, or queen. The Devonshire Arms, Kensington

Kensington is a beautiful area that is popular with families and professionals alike, thanks to the open spaces of Kensington Gardens, popular museums and high-quality boutiques and independent shops. Situated in South Kensington, The Devonshire Arms is famed for being the cosiest pub in the area, offering rustic character and vintage style. The Sunday lunch menu includes a loin of outdoor reared Norfolk pork with crackling.

The Wells Tavern, Hampstead

Hampstead is unlike any other area in London – leafy trees join cobbled streets, giving the residential hotspot a country-style vibe. It’s hard to look past The Wells Tavern on Well Walk when it comes to delicious Sunday roasts. The pub is set over two floors; the downstairs area offering a traditional atmosphere, whilst upstairs is decorated in a classic dining-room style with wood floors and charming decorations. Their popular Sunday lunch consists of rare-breed roast beef, served with crispy potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, succulent root vegetables and greens topped with homemade gravy; we’re already drooling at the thought.

The Beaufort Arms, Beaufort Park

The Beaufort Park development development, in Colindale, North-West London, has seen phenomenal regeneration, reinvigorating the community and increasing the area’s popularity. The Beaufort Arms on Heritage Avenue offers locals the chance to enjoy a traditional Sunday lunch in cosy surroundings. There is a beautiful outside area to dine al fresco during the summer months, whilst the inside interior is contemporary and fresh. You might even find one of our Beaufort Park team enjoying the 21-day aged sirloin steak with all the trimmings. Do say hello!

The Duke of Wellington, Marylebone

Marylebone is one of the capital’s most distinguished areas, offers residents a sleek and stylish place to live in the heart of central London. No area is complete without a pub serving a marvellous Sunday roast and the Duke of Wellington is one of the best. There’s a bar area downstairs where you can pull up a stool and grab a bite but if you really want to eat in style, head to the restaurant upstairs and enjoy a sumptuous roast veal and lobster salad with endives and sweet dill dressing.

The Gun, Docklands

During the week, professionals are hard at work in the popular areas of Canary Wharf and Docklands, home to some of London’s major financial institutions. Once the weekend arrives however, the atmosphere is somewhat more relaxed and interestingly-named pub, The Gun, offers residents the chance to unwind in style with its delightful restaurant area. Their Sunday lunch menu includes seared Isle of Man king scallops, beetroot, garlic sautéed celery and brioche crumble. Perfect for unwinding after a long week at your desk!

Princess of Wales, Blackheath

This delightful pub in Blackheath, located on the Greenwich borders, used to serve as the changing room for one of London’s oldest rugby clubs. These days, it has been transformed into a cosy idyll where you can enjoy a delicious Sunday roast after a scenic stroll of the heath. The half roast Shropshire chicken with parsley and thyme butter is a definite favourite amongst our Greenwich team!

Hawksmoor, Knightsbridge

Technically, Hawksmoor isn’t a pub, but we couldn’t leave this luxury restaurant out of our list. Whilst they’re a little more expensive than some others in the list, they serve one of the best Sunday roasts in London. Throw in the fact it’s in Knightsbridge, one of the most exclusive areas in London, and you’ve got all the right ingredients for the perfect Sunday. Spend some time shopping at Harrods, Harvey Nichols or one of the luxury designer boutique stores, then head to the restaurant on Yeoman’s Row and enjoy the roast beef which comes served with duck fat roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, carrots, greens and lashings of bone marrow and onion gravy. Simply superb!

The Bull, Highgate

Located on North Hill in the leafy area of Highgate, The Bull proves ever-popular, with customers appreciating the friendly, family atmosphere. The spacious pub has its own microbrewery installed on the premises; be sure to sample their popular craft ale, Beer Street! They have an extensive Sunday lunch menu which includes confit duck pappardelle with wild mushrooms and a porcini and brandy velouté.

The Ealing Park Tavern, Ealing

Ealing has always been a popular area for families, which is attributed to the many open spaces and excellent travel options. Heathrow airport can be reached within 20 minutes via the M4 and the West End is only a 30 minutes journey by tube, via the Central or District lines. Our very own local Ealing branch manager, Nick Hubbard, recommends The Ealing Tavern as one of the best in the area for Sunday lunch.

This delightful family-friendly pub near South Ealing, offers a traditional pub setting with a touch of modern class, and a menu to match. We recommend the slow-roast Middle White pork belly with crackling and apple sauce. Or if you’re enjoying a meal with a group, why not try the 45-day aged beef (pre-order only), which serves up to eight people – yum!

The Harwood Arms, Fulham

The Harwood Arms is one of Fulham’s best-kept secrets. The pub is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Fulham Broadway and offers a snug setting, where you can cosy up and enjoy a scrumptious roast. We recommended you work up an appetite with a walk along the River Thames followed by a visit to some of Fulham’s wonderful shops (why not stop by our Imperial Wharf branch if you fancy finding a rental home in the area?) before finishing off at the Harwood Arms. They are renowned for their braised Herdwick lamb with swede, garlic spinach, pearl barley and white carrot, which we’d suggest is best followed by a buttermilk pudding with Camp coffee and brown sugar.
