Turned out nice again

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

As the Chelsea Flower Show (till 24 May) is in full swing, our attention turns to all things outdoor. Now we’re not aiming to outmatch Hillier Nurseries’ record for 66 Chelsea Golds, but we do have some ideas to make even the most bijoux outdoor space look award-winning. Whether your property boasts a field of green, terrace, balcony or window box, here are six ways to turn your exterior into something sensational.
 Marina Point

1. Room with a view

Think of your outdoor space as an extension of your living room – since many decks and terraces run off the main living area, often linked by French or patio doors, it makes sense to create synergy and flow between the two. Think of the line of vision – if your view is glorious, keep it visually accessible, but if it’s less than salubrious, use plants such as tall, fast-growing bamboo to avert your gaze.

2. Take a seat

Keep furniture in scale with your space – there are some very pretty bistroseating sets on the high street, which are perfect for small areas. For more relaxed seating, check out
B&Q’s Retro collection or go traditional with Cox & Cox’s deck chair made for two.

3. Less rough, more smooth

If your ground surface is looking less than salubrious, cover it up! We’re not talking astro turf (although we have seen the prickly stuff used as a low-maintenance lawn option) but one of Green Decore’s eco-friendly recycled polypropylene rugs – our personal fave is the geometric Nirvana but there’s a good choice to work with most interiors.

4. Lighting, lighting, lighting

Redington Road Garden ViewSounds obvious, but extend daytime into night-time on the terrace with some clever solar lighting. Add a readymade nature vibe with either the Solar Centre’s orchid string or IKEA’s chirpy bird chain– too tweet. After dark, add one of The White Company’s Vintage Lanterns for an atmospheric glow.

5. The future’s so bright…

Eternally optimistic, we’re anticipating a long, hot summer of sunshine, so get your outdoor area sorted with some serious shade. Chris Kabel’s clever Shadylace Parasol lets dappled light filter through, so you feel like you’re sitting under a tree, but for a permanent solution to sun squinting, consider a snazzy shade sail.

6. Plant life

55 A Windermere Avenue GardenNo matter how industrial your setting, it’s easy to soften the look with the green stuff. Again, think scale, but also consider the statement you want to make. If it’s a soft, cottage style you’re after, try a rustic rattan planter or window box with super scented sweet peas or lavender. Or for instant impact invest in a copper or zinc Bronzino that’s guaranteed to trigger a keeping up with the Jones’ moment.

If you don’t currently have an irresistible vista, we’d be delighted to show you some stunning properties that come with your very own outdoor spot, including this 5 bedroom house in Knightsbridge and this 3 bedroom apartment property in Imperial Wharf.
