Best known as the home of the legendary Manchester United and Manchester City football clubs, Manchester is the second most-populous city in the UK after London. Thanks to its relatively low cost of living, excellent schools and good job opportunities, this former industrial city has become an ideal home for people seeking quality of life.

Robust economic development creates employment and investment opportunities

Manchester is at the heart of the £350 billion Northern Powerhouse Initiative, whose aim is to boost the UK economy through investment in skills, transportation and culture. As the leading Northern Powerhouse area and the hub of the digital economy, Manchester has attracted international banks, and technology and media giants, such as Amazon, British Telecom, Google, Microsoft, KPMG, Deloitte and PricewaterhouseCoopers, to set up headquarters. Around 20% of the Manchester population work in the financial, professional or science sectors.

Situated near the Manchester Ship Canal, MediaCityUK is home to more than 200 creative agencies and prominent media organisations, such as the BBC, ITV and film production company Dock 10,forming an ecosystem with a working population of about 10,000,and the number is growing as more multicultural corporates move in. MediaCityUK is expected to create over 15,000 jobs by 2038, generating up to £1 billion in economic benefits. Employment prospects are promising for Mancunians.

Although the Manchester economy is growing rapidly, the cost of living is still 20% lower than that in London. For example, Rentals in Manchester are 53.82% lower than in London. Whereas consumer prices including rent in Manchester are 31.21% lower than in London. Alongside the rising job opportunities, a more relaxing living environment, and the First Time Buyers’ Scheme incentive, more and more professionals have been migrating to Manchester, driving an increasing number of transactions in the local residential market. First-time buyers are very active and are usually in position to move quickly when a sale is agreed. The market is forecast to remain very strong over the next few months.

The growing population in Manchester is projected to exceed 2.8 million by 2025, fuelling strong demand for neighbouring properties, with an expected 28.2% appreciation in property prices over the next five years, the highest increase in the UK. To cater for the surging housing demand in the future, the UK Government launched the Strategic Waters Initiative, targeting the delivery of about 30,000 new homes in seven selected sites along the rivers, canals and docklands, including MediaCityUK at Salford Quays, in the coming 30 years.

Excellent school catchment area

Manchester is also famous for its education facilities, especially in Sale and Trafford. The city hosts the University of Manchester, a Nobel Prize winner incubator, as well as Manchester Metropolitan University, Bolton University, the Royal Northern College of Music, a music conservatoire, and the neighbouring University of Salford, providing wide range of choices for quality tertiary education. Trafford is one of the best school catchment areas in Manchester, with 67 primary schools, 18 secondary schools, 8 special schools and 10 public schools. Among the most popular for children are Well Green Primary School, Springfield Primary School and Bowdon CofE Primary School, along with the Altrincham Grammar School for Boys, Loreto Grammar School and St. Ambrose College! They are some of the 14 Ofsted-rated “outstanding” primary and secondary schools for which Mancunians have given a thumbs-up recommendation.
